About four years ago, Qiong Messier, a woman from China, and her son walked into Glen Bentjen’s office, hoping for a fresh start.
Bentjen, affectionately known as Mr. B, was the Riverview Christian Academy principal at that time, and he remembers the moment clearly. “They came in, just the two of them. The father had passed away. It was hard not to feel the weight they were carrying.” That year, Quinton, the son, began his Adventist education journey as a fifth grader.
Quinton was doing really well in his studies, but more importantly, he began learning about Jesus. And when he came home from school, he could not wait to share with his mom what he had learned that day. He told her about Jesus and these new beliefs he had learned from the Bible.
Qiong, seeing the excitement of her son, had a conversation with Mr. B. and started asking questions: “What do Adventists believe? Why do you all seem... different?” That’s when Mr. B invited her to attend church with them. Glenn’s wife connected with her instantly, and the church community welcomed her.
Qiong’s curiosity grew into a desire to study the Bible, and over the course of a year, despite the challenges of biblical vocabulary, cultural differences, and language barriers, they slowly worked through 28 Bible study lessons. Mr. B downloaded a Mandarin version of the Bible app on her phone. And his wife gifted her a Chinese-English Bible from their time working in Taiwan.
After the Bible studies, Qiong made her decision to be baptized. “I like this,” she said. “I can see from the Bible that Adventists follow the Bible, and I want to keep learning more.” On October 25, 2025, Qiong was baptized.
“It’s pretty amazing,” Mr. B reflected. “You would think someone coming from her background might be more resistant to Christianity, but somehow she fell in love with Jesus.”
“We are just doing our day-to-day jobs, teaching, showing up, but we never know who’s walking through the door. Maybe God sent them to us. Sometimes we lose sight of that. We need to keep our eyes in line with His will.”
It’s amazing how God brings all the pieces together to give someone a chance to get to know Him and fall in love with Jesus.

«De alguna manera, se enamoró de Jesús»
Hace unos cuatro años, Qiong Messier, una mujer de China, y su hijo entraron en la oficina de Glen Bentjen con la esperanza de empezar de nuevo.
Bentjen, cariñosamente conocido como Mr. B, era el director de la Riverview Christian Academy en ese momento, y recuerda claramente ese momento. «Han entrado, solo ellos dos. El padre había fallecido. Era difícil no sentir el peso que cargaban». Ese año, Quinton, el hijo, comenzó en la educación adventista en quinto año.
Quinton iba muy bien en sus estudios, pero lo más importante es que empezó a aprender sobre Jesús. Y cuando volvía a casa del colegio, no podía esperar para compartir con su madre lo que había aprendido ese día. Le hablaba de Jesús y de esas nuevas creencias que había aprendido de la Biblia.
Qiong, al ver la emoción de su hijo, conversó con el señor B. y empezó a hacer preguntas: «¿Qué creen los adventistas? ¿Por qué parecen ser… diferentes?» Fue entonces cuando el señor B la invitó a ir a la iglesia con ellos. La esposa de Glenn se conectó con ella al instante, y la comunidad de la iglesia la recibió con gusto.
La curiosidad de Qiong se convirtió en un deseo de estudiar la Biblia y, a lo largo de un año, a pesar de los retos del vocabulario bíblico, las diferencias culturales y las barreras lingüísticas, fueron avanzando poco a poco en 28 lecciones de estudio bíblico. El señor B descargó una versión en mandarín de la aplicación de la Biblia en su teléfono. Y su esposa le regaló una Biblia en chino-inglés de sus días cuando trabajaba en Taiwán.
Tras los estudios bíblicos, Qiong tomó la decisión de bautizarse. «Me gusta esto», dijo. «Veo en la Biblia que los adventistas siguen la Biblia, y quiero seguir aprendiendo más». El 25 de octubre de 2025, Qiong fue bautizada.
«Es bastante increíble», reflexionó el señor B. «Uno pensaría que alguien de su entorno podría ser más resistente al cristianismo, pero de alguna manera se enamoró de Jesús».
«Solo hacemos nuestro trabajo diario, enseñamos, estamos presentes, pero nunca sabemos quién entra por la puerta. Quizá Dios nos los envió. A veces perdemos eso de vista. Debemos mantener la mirada alineada con su voluntad».
Es increíble cómo Dios une todas las piezas para dar a alguien la oportunidad de conocerle y enamorarse de Jesús.
