Fifty years ago, a small group of members in Glendale came together as the question was asked, “We live in Glendale—why do we have to go far away to go to church when we could have our own church here in Glendale?” The Central Filipino church in Eagle Rock, planted in 1957 as the first Filipino Adventist church in the U.S., had grown to a point where a new congregation in Glendale made sense.
At every step, the Lord provided for the new congregation. After renting a facility on Pacific Avenue for about four years, they began to outgrow it. Then, at a local mayor’s breakfast, Pastor Chua Banaag connected with a realtor who shared about a church for sale in Glendale on S. Louise Street and allowed the pastor to check out the facility to see if it would be a good fit for the congregation. The building was soon purchased for around $500,000 to become the new home to the Glendale Filipino church (GFC), and the congregation still worships there today.
Since then, eight lead pastors have served at GFC, and God has brought GFC to a new chapter as Michael Magdadaro joins the congregation as its new lead pastor this summer.
Members and friends celebrated the 50th anniversary with a special weekend of festivities this May. Sabbath events included the morning church service, an afternoon worship service, and an evening new member welcome party luau. On Sunday, members gathered for food, fellowship, and fresh air at a church picnic.
Magdadaro shared a message on Sabbath morning centered on Hebrews 12:2—encouraging those in attendance to stay committed to the mission with humility and determination. “Friends, family, thank you for responding to the call,” he said as members gathered in response to the closing appeal. “God sees your heart. God sees that we are committed to carry the torch and to light the way for others who are in darkness, to usher in the Second Coming, and to lead people to a living relationship with Jesus.”
On Sabbath afternoon, the Southern California Conference (SCC) leadership commemorated the occasion with a letter read by SCC President John H. Cress. “Since your establishment in 1975, your congregation has embodied the essence of being ‘The Church with His Heart,’ fostering a loving and compassionate community that reflects Christ’s love in every endeavor,” he read. The letter was accompanied by a $5,000 check from the conference to support the continued work of ministry.
As GFC embarks on the next 50 years, they build on the foundations laid in the first half-century of their history as they prepare themselves for Christ’s Second Coming and continue sharing the good news of His return with others.

50 años de la Iglesia Glendale Filipino, «La iglesia con Su corazón»
Hace cincuenta años, un pequeño grupo de miembros en Glendale se reunió cuando se hizo la pregunta: «Vivimos en Glendale, ¿por qué tenemos que ir lejos a la iglesia cuando podríamos tener nuestra propia iglesia aquí en Glendale?» La iglesia filipina central en Eagle Rock, plantada en 1957 como la primera iglesia adventista filipina en los Estados Unidos, había crecido hasta un punto en el que una nueva congregación en Glendale tenía sentido.
A cada paso, el Señor proveyó para la nueva congregación. Después de alquilar una instalación en Pacific Avenue durante unos cuatro años, les empezo a quedar pequeña. En el desayuno de un alcalde, el pastor Chua Banaag se conectó con un agente de bienes raíces que le indicó una iglesia en venta en la calle S. Louise y permitió que el pastor revisara las instalaciones para ver si sería una buena opción para la congregación. El edificio pronto fue comprado por alrededor de $500,000 para convertirse en el nuevo hogar de la iglesia filipina de Glendale (GFC), y la congregación todavía adora ahí hoy en día.

Los miembros y amigos celebraron el 50 aniversario con un fin de semana especial de festividades en mayo. Los eventos del sábado incluyeron el culto de la mañana, un servicio de adoración por la tarde y una fiesta de bienvenida para nuevos miembros por la noche. El domingo, los miembros se reunieron para comer, confraternizar y tomar aire fresco en un picnic en la iglesia.
Magdadaro compartió un mensaje el sábado por la mañana centrado en Hebreos 12:2, animando a los asistentes a mantenerse comprometidos con la misión con humildad y determinación. «Amigos, familiares, gracias por responder al llamado», dijo mientras los miembros se reunían en respuesta al llamado final. «Dios ve tu corazón. Dios ve que estamos comprometidos a llevar la antorcha e iluminar el camino para otros que están en tinieblas, a marcar el comienzo de la Segunda Venida y a guiar a las personas a una relación viva con Jesús».
El sábado por la tarde, el liderazgo de la Southern California Conference (SCC) conmemoró la ocasión con una carta leída por el presidente de SCC, John H. Cress. «Desde su establecimiento en 1975, su congregación ha encarnado la esencia de ser “La iglesia con Su corazón”, fomentando una comunidad amorosa y compasiva que refleja el amor de Cristo en cada esfuerzo», leyó. La carta iba acompañada de un cheque de $5,000 de la conferencia para apoyar la continuación de la obra del ministerio.
A medida que GFC se embarca en los próximos 50 años, construyen sobre los cimientos establecidos en el primer medio siglo de su historia mientras se preparan para la Segunda Venida de Cristo y continúan compartiendo las buenas nuevas de Su regreso con los demás.
