The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine has awarded $9 million to Loma Linda University Health to create a Community Care Center of Excellence (CCCE) in the Inland Empire and desert region. This Center of Excellence is led by Hisham Abdel-Azim, MD, MS, division chief of Transplant and Cell Therapy/Hematological Malignancies.
The CCCE program is the first of its kind designed to make regenerative medicine clinical trials and treatments accessible for Californians. “This funding ensures underserved populations will have local access to cutting-edge cell, gene, and regenerative medicine therapies, such as CAR T cell therapy,” Abdel-Azim said.
Grant funding will also support a state-of-the-art transplant and cell therapy Good Manufacturing Practices lab that not only serves cancer patients but extends to other non-malignant diseases such as neurological and immune disorders. The lab will allow for onsite cell manufacturing capacity and build a robust team to offer cutting-edge treatments and trials for a wide range of conditions, including cancers, sickle cell disease, and various neurological and immune disorders.
“We now have the ability to join forces with academic and industry experts to bring world-class technologies directly to the underserved Inland Empire and desert region patients,” Abdel-Azim said. “We're changing the way we do medicine in collaboration with our colleagues in neurology and neurosurgery among various other specialties.”
Loma Linda University Transplant and Cellular Therapy is the only program in the region accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, making Loma Linda University Health the only center in the vast Inland Empire geographic region offering these advanced, personalized therapies for adults and children.
Loma Linda University Health is the first and only provider in the Inland Empire and desert region offering cell, gene, and regenerative medicine therapy for both children and adults.

El Instituto de Medicina Regenerativa de California ha otorgado 9 millones de dólares a Loma Linda University Health para crear un Centro de Excelencia en Atención Comunitaria (CCCE) en el Inland Empire y la región desértica. Ese Centro de Excelencia está dirigido por Hisham Abdel-Azim, jefe de la división de Trasplantes y Terapia Celular/Malignidades Hematológicas.
El programa CCCE es el primero de su tipo diseñado para hacer accesibles los ensayos clínicos y tratamientos de medicina regenerativa para los californianos. «Esa financiación garantiza que las poblaciones desatendidas tengan acceso a terapias de medicina celular, génica y regenerativa de vanguardia, como la terapia con células CAR T», dijo Abdel-Azim.
El financiamiento también apoyará un laboratorio de Buenas Prácticas de Fabricación de última generación para trasplantes y terapia celular, que no solo atiende a pacientes con cáncer, sino que también se extiende a otras enfermedades no malignas, como trastornos neurológicos e inmunológicos. El laboratorio permitirá la capacidad de fabricación celular in situ y formará un equipo sólido para ofrecer tratamientos y ensayos de vanguardia para una amplia gama de condiciones, incluyendo cánceres, anemia falciforme y diversos trastornos neurológicos e inmunológicos.
«Ahora tenemos la capacidad de unir fuerzas con expertos académicos e industriales para llevar tecnologías de primer nivel directamente a los pacientes desatendidos del Inland Empire y de regiones desérticas», afirmó Abdel-Azim. «Estamos cambiando la forma como practicamos medicina en colaboración con nuestros colegas de neurología y neurocirugía, entre otras especialidades.»
La Terapia de Trasplantes y Celulares de Loma Linda University es el único programa de la región acreditado por la Fundación para la Acreditación de la Terapia Celular, lo que convierte a Loma Linda University en el único centro de la vasta región geográfica del Inland Empire que ofrece esas terapias avanzadas y personalizadas para adultos y niños.
Loma Linda University Health es el primer y único proveedor en el Inland Empire y la región desértica que ofrece terapia de medicina celular, genética y regenerativa tanto para niños como para adultos.
