Teens4Christ, a ministry at Vallejo Drive church where teenagers can safely hang out, have fun, and make connections in a Christian environment, has become an integral part of the church since beginning in 2018.
The ministry met the need for an Earliteen Sabbath School class at the time. Initially there was hesitancy; members saw the need but didn’t know how to engage with this age group. Audrey Zorek, who had just taken over as the lower division Sabbath School superintendent, rose to the challenge.
“This is a group that’s easily forgotten in the church,” Audrey said. “This is the time when they start making decisions, start questioning God, and asking why.”
He quickly went to task creating a space that would be welcoming. Aesthetic changes to the designated room, such as bringing in comfortable furniture and updating the decor, brought new energy into the space. He also broke away from the traditional “Earliteen” nomenclature, opting for the catchy Teens4Christ. At that time, the group grew from four to 15 kids.
Then the kids started to outgrow the Teens4Christ age group. Concurrently, a new need emerged: children’s ministry. Zorek switched gears, and for
the next several years, he focused on Kids Connection, Vallejo Drive’s program for children ages three to 10. The cycle continued, and those children were growing up.
“My daughter,” Audrey remembered, “who was 12 at the time, said to me, ‘So, Dad, you know how you did that great thing with the teens? When are you going to start that back now that I’m a teen?’”
Since Zorek was still helping with Kids Connection on Sabbath, he revamped Teens4Christ to create a space for teens to hang out on Friday afternoons after school with games and activities, dinner, and vespers. Word quickly spread.
“Kids started inviting their friends from school, their neighborhood—all over,” Audrey said. “They were just pouring in on Friday because there’s this cool place where kids get to hang out with their friends. In one year, we were able to bring that program from five kids to 35 kids.”
“When we get together and show them the importance of church family—how we support each other and can trust each other—feeling that they’re a part of a church is helping them to see Jesus as a friend and someone they can trust,” Audrey said. “My goal is to help them get a little closer to Jesus.”
The group is currently growing from inreach to outreach. As Zorek helps them to see how Jesus was service-oriented, he sees the next step as helping the kids get involved in community service. “That’s what Jesus did,” Audrey said. “That’s what we’ll do.”

Fe, amistad y diversión prosperan a través del ministerio de Teens4Christ
Teens4Christ, un ministerio en la iglesia de Vallejo Drive donde los adolescentes pueden pasar el rato, divertirse y hacer conexiones en un ambiente cristiano, se ha convertido en una parte integral de la iglesia desde que comenzó en 2018.
El ministerio satisfizo la necesidad de una clase de Escuela Sabática de Earliteens en ese momento. Al principio hubo vacilación; los miembros vieron la necesidad, pero no sabían cómo interactuar con chicos de esa edad. Audrey Zorek, que acababa de asumir el cargo de superintendente de la Escuela Sabática de la división inferior, aceptó el desafío.
«Este es un grupo que se olvida fácilmente en la iglesia», dijo Audrey. «Este es el momento en que empiezan a tomar decisiones, a cuestionar a Dios y a preguntar por qué».
Rápidamente se puso manos a la obra para crear un espacio que fuera acogedor. Los cambios estéticos en la habitación designada, como la incorporación de muebles cómodos y la actualización de la decoración, aportaron nueva energía al espacio. También rompió con la nomenclatura tradicional de «Earliteens», optando por la pegadiza Teens4Christ. En ese momento, el grupo creció de cuatro a 15 niños.
Luego, los niños comenzaron a superar al grupo de edad de Teens4Christ. Al mismo tiempo, surgió una nueva necesidad: la pastoral de los chicos. Zorek cambió de marcha, y para los siguientes años, se enfocó en Kids Connection, el programa de Vallejo Drive para chicos de tres a 10 años. El ciclo continuó, y esos niños estaban creciendo.
«Mi hija», recordó Audrey, «que tenía 12 años en ese momento, me dijo: “Entonces, papá, ¿sabes cómo hiciste esa gran cosa con los adolescentes? ¿Cuándo vas a empezar eso ahora que soy una adolescente?”».
Dado que Zorek todavía estaba ayudando con Kids Connection los sábados, renovó Teens4Christ para crear un espacio para que los adolescentes pasaran el rato los viernes por la tarde después de la escuela con juegos y actividades, cena y vísperas. Rápidamente se corrió la voz.
«Los niños comenzaron a invitar a sus amigos de la escuela, de su vecindario, de todas partes», dijo Audrey. «Estaban llegando el viernes porque hay un lugar genial donde los niños pueden pasar el rato con sus amigos. En un año, pudimos llevar ese programa de 5 a 35 chicos».
«Cuando nos reunimos y les mostramos la importancia de la familia de iglesia, cómo nos apoyamos unos a otros y podemos confiar unos en otros, sentir que son parte de una iglesia les ayuda a ver a Jesús como un amigo y alguien en quien pueden confiar», dijo Audrey. «Mi objetivo es ayudarlos a acercarse un poco más a Jesús».
A medida que Zorek les ayuda a ver cómo Jesús estaba orientado al servicio, considera que el siguiente paso es ayudar a los chicos a participar en el servicio comunitario. «Eso es lo que hizo Jesús», dijo Audrey. «Eso es lo que haremos».
