Genesis tells us that “In the beginning, God created.” From the start, the Bible states that God is an artist, so is it any wonder that many who walk the earth bear His image as an artist? From photography to graphic design to sculpture, pottery, paint, charcoal, and more, artists across the globe continue to share their gifts with us through various forms of art.
At Holbrook Indian School (HIS) there is no shortage of artists. A great number of our students are incredibly gifted in the arts, and it has been such a blessing and privilege to witness the level of skill and excellence that flowed from their fingertips this year. Our graphic arts teacher, Mrs. Importante, hosted an art exhibit to display their talents schoolwide. Parents and family members were also encouraged to attend.
On April 15, students and three staff members showcased their work during the first-ever HIS art exhibit. Students experienced firsthand the effects that their creativity has on others as they watched fellow students and staff bid for their pieces during the silent auction.
The program began with opening remarks from Mrs. Importante, as well as a few students, sharing why it’s important to develop the gifts and talents we’ve been given by our Creator. Selected staff served as judges for the artwork and together collaborated to decide which awards students received in each category. However, there were two students who stood out among the group. Marina, a ninth-grader, earned the Artist of the Year award, and Leo, a junior, earned the People’s Choice Award as well as the Distinguished Artist award.
Truly, each work of art was a masterpiece because each artist put their heart and soul into it. When we think about the effort and thought that an artist puts into their work, and when we consider Ephesians 2:10—“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (NLT)—we gain a better understanding of His deep love for us.
At HIS, we take great effort to encourage our students to recognize the gifts and talents they’ve been given, and where possible, we help them consider those gifts as part of the decision process when choosing a college or trade school to attend after graduation. In His knowledge and care for our hearts, God gave each one of us the ability to represent Him through our gifts and the mark He left on us as co-creators and co-artists with Him. Let’s remember that truth when we find ourselves at a crossroads, wondering what may be His next step for us.

Génesis nos dice que «En el principio creó Dios». Desde el principio, la Biblia dice que Dios es un artista, así que ¿es de extrañar que muchos de los que caminan por la tierra lleven Su imagen como artistas? Desde la fotografía hasta el diseño gráfico, pasando por la escultura, la cerámica, la pintura, el carboncillo y mucho más, artistas de todo el mundo siguen compartiendo sus dones con nosotros a través de diversas formas de arte.
En Holbrook Indian School (HIS) no faltan artistas. Un gran número de nuestros estudiantes son increíblemente talentosos en las artes, y ha sido una gran bendición y privilegio presenciar el nivel de habilidad y excelencia que fluyó de sus manos este año. Nuestra maestra de artes gráficas, la Sra. Importante, organizó una exhibición de arte para mostrar sus talentos en toda la escuela. También se animó a los padres y familiares a asistir.
El 15 de abril, los estudiantes y tres miembros del personal mostraron su trabajo durante la primera exhibición de arte de HIS. Los estudiantes experimentaron de primera mano los efectos que su creatividad tiene en los demás mientras observaban a sus compañeros y al personal pujar por sus piezas durante la subasta silenciosa.
El programa comenzó con las palabras de apertura de la Sra. Importante, así como de algunos estudiantes, compartiendo por qué es importante desarrollar los dones y talentos que nuestro Creador nos ha dado. El personal seleccionado sirvió como juez para las obras de arte y juntos colaboraron para decidir qué premios recibieron los estudiantes en cada categoría. Sin embargo, hubo dos estudiantes que se destacaron entre el grupo. Marina, estudiante de noveno grado, ganó el premio al Artista del Año, y Leo, estudiante de tercer año, ganó el Premio People’s Choice, así como el premio al Artista Distinguido.
Verdaderamente, cada obra de arte era una obra maestra porque cada artista ponía su corazón y su alma en ella. Cuando pensamos en el esfuerzo y la reflexión que un artista pone en su trabajo, y cuando consideramos Efesios 2:10: «Porque somos la obra maestra de Dios. Él nos ha creado de nuevo en Cristo Jesús, para que podamos hacer las cosas buenas que Él planeó para nosotros hace mucho tiempo» (NTV), obtenemos una mejor comprensión de Su profundo amor por nosotros.
En HIS, hacemos un gran esfuerzo para alentar a nuestros estudiantes a reconocer los dones y talentos que se les han dado y, cuando es posible, los ayudamos a considerar esos dones como parte del proceso de decisión al elegir una universidad o escuela de oficios para asistir después de graduarse. En Su conocimiento y cuidado por nuestros corazones, Dios nos dio a cada uno de nosotros la capacidad de representarlo a través de nuestros dones y la marca que dejó en nosotros como co-creadores y co-artistas con Él. Recordemos esa verdad cuando nos encontremos en una encrucijada, preguntándonos cuál puede ser Su próximo paso para nosotros.
