At Holbrook Indian School (HIS), the focus is on educating the whole person. The method for this approach is our MAPS initiative. MAPS is an acronym for Mental, Academic/Artistic, Physical, and Spiritual—the four pillars of our education program. While Spiritual may be listed as the fourth pillar, it is our first priority and the first of the pillars we seek to demonstrate during our opening week on campus each year.
At HIS, each child who arrives on our campus is welcomed with open arms and hearts. This time of year is joyful and exciting because it means that we get to reconvene our efforts to show Jesus to our students, beginning with the first week of school. With our minds set on Christ, we enjoy the many opportunities to share God’s love and laughter with our students through teachable moments and reflection during the icebreakers and team building activities that take place that first week of each academic year.
We kicked off the new school year with our traditional “handshake” icebreaker event. During the handshake, students and staff line up across from each other and take the opportunity to introduce themselves and put a face to a name, all while rotating in the opposite direction so that each one has a chance to participate. This is a great way for our new students to meet staff. It also gives our returning students the opportunity to reconnect with their teachers and other staff members after a long summer break.
Additionally, our first week of school is geared toward making HIS feel like home. After worship each morning, students and staff engage in team building activities that foster the start of new friendships and academic relationships. One way we show our love to students is by engaging with them in team activities to help set the tone for HIS to be their home away from home. God is a big part of these sessions, with time for reflection on how each activity in which the students participate reflects God’s character.
Several team building exercises this year included get-to-know-you activities in which students had to talk to each other in order to find answers to questions set by our vice principal, Mr. Campos. Other games included the shoe relay, island hop, and the hula hoop challenge. However, the activity that our staff and students enjoyed the most was our start-of-the-year picnic and water play.
God purposely designed children to learn through activity. Students and staff members engaged in laughter, play, and camaraderie as they tagged each other with water cannons, dumped each other into one of the three inflatable pools on the commons, or soaked an unsuspecting teammate with a splash from a water bucket.
Praise God for His wisdom in creating play as a means to educate, grow, and promote unity among children.
Regardless of how children come into our lives, we have a divine duty to lead, guide, respect, protect, love, cherish, and delight in our youth. While the focus at HIS is to educate the whole person and to support our students in their healing journey, our hearts work from the posture of understanding that our students are heirs to the kingdom of God and finding ways to tie that into our Spiritual pillar of education.

Cuarto pilar, primera prioridad
En Holbrook Indian School (HIS), el enfoque está en educar a la persona en su totalidad. El método para ese enfoque es nuestra iniciativa MAPS. MAPS es un acrónimo de Mental, Académico/Artístico, Físico y Espiritual, los cuatro pilares de nuestro programa educativo. Si bien espiritual puede figurar como el cuarto pilar, es nuestra primera prioridad y el primero de los pilares que buscamos demostrar durante nuestra semana de apertura en el campus cada año.
En HIS, cada niño que llega a nuestro campus es recibido con los brazos y el corazón abiertos. Esta época del año es alegre y emocionante porque significa que podemos volver a reunir nuestros esfuerzos para mostrar a Jesús a nuestros estudiantes, comenzando con la primera semana de clases. Con nuestras mentes puestas en Cristo, disfrutamos de las muchas oportunidades para compartir el amor de Dios y reir con nuestros estudiantes a través de momentos de enseñanza y reflexión durante las actividades para romper el hielo y formar equipos que se llevan a cabo esa primera semana de cada año académico.
Comenzamos el nuevo año escolar con nuestro tradicional evento para romper el hielo de «apretón de manos». Durante el apretón de manos, los estudiantes y el personal se alinean uno frente al otro y aprovechan la oportunidad para presentarse y ponerle cara a un nombre, todo mientras giran en la dirección opuesta para que cada uno tenga la oportunidad de participar. Esa es una excelente manera para que nuestros nuevos estudiantes conozcan al personal. También brinda a nuestros estudiantes que regresan la oportunidad de volver a conectarse con sus maestros y otros miembros del personal después de un largo receso de verano.
Además, nuestra primera semana de clases está orientada a hacer que en HIS se sientan como en casa. Después del culto cada mañana, los estudiantes y el personal participan en actividades de formación de equipos que fomentan el inicio de nuevas amistades y relaciones académicas. Una forma como mostramos nuestro amor a los estudiantes es participando con ellos en actividades de equipo para ayudar a establecer el tono para que HIS sea su hogar lejos de casa. Dios es una gran parte de esas sesiones, con tiempo para reflexionar sobre cómo cada actividad en la que participan los estudiantes refleja el carácter de Dios.
Varios ejercicios de trabajo en equipo este año incluyeron actividades para conocerse en las que los estudiantes tuvieron que hablar entre sí para encontrar respuestas a las preguntas planteadas por nuestro subdirector, el Sr. Campos. Otros juegos incluyeron el relevo de zapatos, el salto de isla y el desafío de hula hoop. Sin embargo, la actividad que más disfrutaron nuestro personal y estudiantes fue nuestro picnic y juego acuático de inicio de año.
Dios diseñó a propósito a los niños para que aprendieran a través de la actividad. Los estudiantes y los miembros del personal se reían, jugaban y camaradeaban mientras se marcaban unos a otros con cañones de agua, se arrojaban unos a otros a una de las tres piscinas inflables en los espacios comunes o empapaban a un compañero de equipo desprevenido con un chapoteo de un balde de agua.
Alabado sea Dios por su sabiduría al crear el juego como un medio para educar, hacer crecer y promover la unidad entre los niños.
Independientemente de cómo lleguen los niños a nuestra vida, tenemos el deber divino de liderar, guiar, respetar, proteger, amar, apreciar y deleitar nuestra juventud. Si bien el enfoque de HIS es educar a la persona en su totalidad y apoyar a nuestros estudiantes en su viaje de sanación, nuestros corazones trabajan desde la postura de comprender que nuestros estudiantes son herederos del reino de Dios y encontrar formas de vincular eso con nuestro pilar espiritual de educación.
