In 2026, as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its founding, Liberty magazine will reach its own historic milestone—120 years of continuous publication. Since 1906, Liberty has served as a key public outreach tool of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, sharing trusted information about religious freedom with lawmakers, judges, attorneys, and civic and faith leaders across North America.
The Church State Council is responsible for this work within the Pacific Union. As a public policy and legal advocacy office, the Council addresses religious workplace accommodation, monitors legislative developments, and responds to emerging challenges throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Hawaii. Executive Director Alan J. Reinach, Esq., continues to lead these efforts, and the recent addition of Steve Allred, Esq., strengthens the Council’s capacity for legal and public affairs engagement.
The 2026 emphasis on “Clarity in Chaos” highlights the growing need for clear, principled advocacy in a rapidly changing legal and cultural environment. The annual Religious Liberty offering benefiting Liberty magazine will be collected in churches on Jan. 10, 2026. This has traditionally been the month when Adventist congregations focus on religious liberty, but the 120th anniversary—and the nation’s semiquincentennial—invite a broader, yearlong reflection on the role of freedom of conscience in American life.
“To a greater extent than we may realize, religious liberty and the separation of church and state are part of the DNA of the Adventist Church,” observed Reinach. “If you haven’t read Liberty magazine lately, the current chaos is a great time to start. It’s essential reading for those who want an Adventist perspective on issues impacting our freedoms.”
As both anniversaries unfold, Liberty magazine and the Church State Council will continue to play a visible role in regional and national conversations about constitutional rights, workplace accommodation, and the future of religious freedom in the United States.
