Pathfinder Honor Focused on Youth Safety and Wise Decision-Making
A new Pathfinder honor titled “Spy Danger” has been released to help Adventist young people strengthen their awareness, sharpen their judgment, and develop the skills needed to stay safe in an increasingly complex world. The honor, created by Adventist Risk Management, Inc. (ARM) and approved by the world church’s Youth Ministries Department, introduces Pathfinders to the essential ideas behind risk management in a simple, practical, and age-appropriate way.
The development of the Spy Danger honor reflects a growing emphasis within the church on preparing young people not only for service and leadership but also for real-world challenges. The honor curriculum guides participants through a series of activities designed to help them think critically about their surroundings, recognize potential hazards, and evaluate choices before acting.
The requirements introduce four key areas: understanding what risk looks like, identifying factors that contribute to unsafe situations, evaluating multiple options, and choosing the safest course of action. The emphasis on careful thought and intentional choices also connects naturally with existing Pathfinder values: teamwork, service, responsibility, and spiritual growth. While the concepts draw from the field of risk management, they are presented through stories, discussions, and everyday scenarios that resonate with young people.
“This honor helps our young people want to feel confident, capable, and useful,” said Randy Hill, vice president for youth ministries for the Pacific Union Conference. “Safety isn’t just about reacting to danger—it’s about caring for each other, thinking clearly, and choosing wisely. Spy Danger helps to develop the kind of leadership the Pathfinder program exists to nurture.”
