Each year the juniors and seniors at Holbrook Indian School (HIS) engage with various colleges and universities in our region. They recently took a trip to California to visit three Seventh-day Adventist higher education institutions: Pacific Union College, La Sierra University, and San Manuel Gateway College, which is an affiliate of Loma Linda University.
At San Manuel Gateway College they were introduced to the health sciences department. They toured the grounds and library at La Sierra University and talked with current students about their college experience. However, the most impactful of the three campus visits was at Pacific Union College (PUC).
When asked what part they liked the best, Abbie and Dakota shared details of several activities they engaged in while visiting PUC. Both girls particularly enjoyed talking with the career service representative. “She gave us reality advice. She went deep and talked about the importance of having good time management and to not slack off. She didn’t just tell us that college is fun and that we should just do it.”
Additional activities included a campus tour of PUC, a scavenger hunt, and bowling. During their bowling excursion, the recruiter, Abraham, taught our students how to curve a bowling ball as they played. Abbie and Dakota playfully argued about who did better at curving. The group stayed through the weekend, which naturally included attending church. Afterwards, Abbie shared, “We were invited to the president’s house for Sabbath lunch. I really liked that.”
One particularly exciting encounter during their tour of PUC was the anatomage table in the health department. According to the PUC website, “This state-of-the-art technology is the most advanced human-based medical education system offering digitized human cadavers and medical tools.”
“We felt this table and the resource of having five human cadavers would be beneficial not just in pre-nursing but also as the students progress into nursing,” said PUC Dean of Nursing and Health Science Kimberly Dunker.1 Dakota and Abbie very much liked interacting with the anatomage table, as it sparked curiosity about the human body and medicine.
Another key area of interest was the printing press. Many of our students do not come to Holbrook Indian School with thoughts for their future after high school. Most only consider careers they are familiar with because of family members’ career choices, like welding or auto mechanics. These are noble professions in themselves, but we want our students to know all of the options available to them based on their own personal skill set.
For example, one of our juniors, Leo, is a gifted and talented artist. While engaging with the printing press at PUC and creating a tote bag with a graphic, he was inspired to consider pursuing a career in art. With this new option, and since it is something he loves, he is now open to the idea of attending college after graduation to hone his skills as an artist.
We support our students in whichever path they choose after they graduate and leave HIS. We also want to provide them with as much necessary information as possible so they can make an informed decision about their future beyond HIS. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (NIV). God’s plans are always best, and sometimes having the proper information helps us to discern the bright future filled with hope that He has in store.

Un esperanzado futuro
Cada año, los estudiantes de tercer y cuarto año de Holbrook Indian School (HIS) se relacionan con varios colegios y universidades de nuestra región. Recientemente hicieron un viaje a California para visitar tres instituciones adventistas del séptimo día de educación superior: Pacific Union College, La Sierra University y San Manuel Gateway College, que está afiliado a Loma Linda University.
En San Manuel Gateway College fueron introducidos al departamento de ciencias de la salud. Recorrieron los terrenos y la biblioteca de La Sierra University y hablaron con los estudiantes sobre su experiencia universitaria. Sin embargo, la más impactante de las tres visitas al campus fue en Pacific Union College (PUC).
Cuando se les preguntó qué parte les gustó más, Abbie y Dakota compartieron detalles de varias actividades en las que participaron mientras visitaban PUC. Ambas chicas disfrutaron especialmente hablando con la representante del servicio de carrera. «Nos dio consejos apropiados. Profundizó y habló de la importancia de tener una buena gestión del tiempo. No solo nos dijo que PUC es divertido y que deberíamos simplemente hacerlo».
Las actividades adicionales incluyeron un recorrido por el campus de PUC y bolos. Durante su excursión de bolos, el reclutador, Abraham, enseñó a nuestros estudiantes cómo curvar una bola de boliche mientras jugaban. Abbie y Dakota discutieron en broma sobre quién lo hacía mejor. El grupo se quedó todo el fin de semana, lo que naturalmente incluyó asistir a la iglesia. Después, Abbie compartió: «Nos invitaron a la casa del presidente para el almuerzo del sábado. Eso me gustó mucho».
Un encuentro particularmente emocionante durante su recorrido por PUC fue la mesa de anatomía en el departamento de salud. Según el sitio web de PUC, «esta tecnología de vanguardia es el sistema de educación médica basado en humanos más avanzado que ofrece cadáveres humanos digitalizados y herramientas médicas».
«Sentimos que esta mesa y el recurso de tener cinco cadáveres humanos serían beneficiosos no solo en la preenfermería, sino también a medida que los estudiantes avanzan hacia la enfermería», dijo la decana de Enfermería y Ciencias de la Salud de PUC, Kimberly Dunker.1 A Dakota y Abbie les gustó mucho interactuar con la mesa de anatomía, ya que despertó la curiosidad sobre el cuerpo humano y la medicina.
Otra área clave de interés fue la imprenta. Muchos de nuestros estudiantes no vienen a Holbrook Indian School con pensamientos para su futuro después de la escuela secundaria. La mayoría solo considera carreras con las que están familiarizados debido a las opciones de carrera de los miembros de su familia, como soldadura o mecánica automotriz. Esas son profesiones nobles en sí mismas, pero queremos que nuestros estudiantes conozcan todas las opciones disponibles para ellos en función de su conjunto de habilidades personales.
Por ejemplo, uno de nuestros estudiantes, Leo, es un artista dotado y talentoso. Mientras se involucraba con la imprenta en PUC y creaba una bolsa de mano con un gráfico, se inspiró para considerar seguir una carrera en el arte. Con esta nueva opción, y dado que es algo que le encanta, ahora está abierto a la idea de asistir a la universidad después de graduarse para perfeccionar sus habilidades como artista.
Apoyamos a nuestros estudiantes en cualquier carrera que elijan después de graduarse y salir de HIS. También queremos proporcionarles la mayor cantidad de información necesaria posible para que puedan tomar una decisión informada sobre su futuro después de HIS. Jeremías 29:11 dice: «Porque yo sé los planes que tengo para vosotros, dice el Señor, planes para prosperaros y no para haceros daño, planes para daros esperanza y un futuro». Los planes de Dios siempre son los mejores, y a veces tener la información adecuada nos ayuda a discernir el futuro brillante y lleno de esperanza que él tiene reservado.
