May Retreats Reignite Mission and Community Across the Northern California Conference
By the Communication Department
The month of May brought a renewed sense of purpose, spiritual vitality, and community connection to the Northern California Conference (NCC) as three distinct groups—Adventist Community Services (ACS), Hispanic Men’s Ministries, and Oakland Market Street church—held retreats at Leoni Meadows. While each event was unique, they all shared a common goal: to live out the mission of leading people to an abundant life in Jesus and preparing them for His soon return.

The ACS Retreat gathered more than 50 community service leaders, volunteers, and church staff for a time of worship, education, and mutual encouragement. The weekend addressed real-world ministry challenges and opportunities, with breakout sessions on homelessness, volunteer training, fundraising, and community partnerships. Panel discussions provided space for open dialogue about barriers to service and creative ways to respond.
“It was so good to see our leaders come together to learn and share,” said Kathy Batchelor, retreat organizer. “You could feel the passion these individuals have for serving others in the name of Christ.”
James Lim, director of NCC Community Services, stated, “After years of tireless service, this retreat gave our local leaders time to relax and reconnect with God and with one another.”

The annual Hispanic Men’s Retreat brought together 125 men under the theme “Hombres de Acuerdo a su Corazón” (Men After His Own Heart). This powerful weekend focused on spiritual growth, obedience, humility, and faithfulness. Through testimonies, prayer, and small-group discussions, participants shared their journeys and formed meaningful connections.
“It was a true blessing to see these men inspired to grow in their walk with God and return home ready to serve their families and communities with renewed purpose,” said Paul Guevara, NCC Hispanic Ministries Coordinator.
That same weekend, Oakland Market Street church held its annual family retreat, designed with a different focus—rest, relationship, and intergenerational connection. Organized by Eleta Cook and the church social committee, the weekend included joyful games, collaborative Sabbath activities, lakeside baptisms, and a special “Passing the Torch” ceremony.
“This retreat revitalized our church family and reminded us why we serve,” said member Lauren Conn.

Together, these retreats exemplify the impact of mission-driven, community-relevant gatherings that engage enthusiastic members and foster spiritual growth throughout the Northern California Conference.
