Students Represent MBA Well at Annual Rotary Youth Speech Contest

Each year Rotary International sponsors a youth speech contest in which high school students, following a set of specific criteria, compete for scholarship money. The contest begins at the local club level, and this year four MBA Speech & Debate class students prepared speeches to be given at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Capitola/Aptos. Winners advance to the area level and then on to the regional and district levels as the competition continues.

This year’s theme was “Service Above Self,” and students were required to apply the Rotary Four-Way Test as they prepared their speech: 1) it must be true, 2) it must be fair to all concerned, 3) it must build goodwill and better friendships, and 4) it must be beneficial to all concerned. Notes, props, displays, and prompters were not allowed and, to ensure an unbiased environment, students were prohibited from introducing themselves or telling what school they came from until after the presentations and judging had concluded.

The MBA students who participated were Symeona Resnick, Riley Brucato, Ivette Leyva-Chan, and Lara Weberling. We are excited to report that Symeona and Riley took first and second place respectively at the club level. Symeona’s passionate and heartfelt presentation focused on service through advocacy. “My main point,” said Symeona, “is that neutrality and silence only help the people doing the oppressing and not the ones being oppressed.” She stood up tall, spoke with confidence, stated her case clearly, and left the audience thoroughly mesmerized by her presentation. When it was all over, there was a moment of quiet—almost a reverence—before the crowd erupted in thunderous applause.

As the competition moved beyond the club level, Symeona continued to prove to others what we already knew about her: she is an amazingly talented and articulate young lady. Her next two presentations were at the area level (covering the greater Bay Area) and regional level (covering all of Northern California). Symeona won at each level and received over $1,000 in prize money. 

Symeona came to MBA at the beginning of her sophomore year needing a change of scenery from her previous school—no disciplinary issues, no particular crises, just a change of scenery. At that time, Symeona’s dad, Josh, was working for a company that leases space on the campus at Monterey Bay Academy, and Josh liked what he saw of MBA’s students and program from his position on the sidelines.

The Resnicks come from a fairly conservative Orthodox Christian faith tradition, and during our first appointment together, it became quickly apparent that many of our values and beliefs aligned. What they needed as a family from MBA was a school that didn’t contradict their conservative Christian values, and what Symeona needed was a school whose core philosophy was grounded in the love and acceptance of Jesus. They found both, and Symeona was enrolled.

Today Symeona is a recently graduated senior who found in MBA the Christ-centered school community she was looking for. Furthermore, she became a key contributor toward creating that community for other students looking for something different from a school.

Before this experience with the Rotary speech competition, Symeona could be somewhat shy and tentative, but she says that taking MBA’s Speech & Debate class unlocked something within her that she will continue to pursue. “Because of this experience, I’m going to keep speaking about issues of importance,” Symeona asserted, “because people came up to me afterward and told me what an impact my speech had on them. I want to make a difference because I see things in the world that just aren’t right, and it’s my generation’s turn to do something about it.”

How did it all end? Symeona advanced to the district finals (covering the whole state of California), where she competed along with one other northern region winner and two contest winners from the southern region. MBA is proud to say that Symeona was the state-level runner-up in this year’s Rotary Youth Speech Contest, winning a total of nearly $3,000 in scholarship money. Symeona represented MBA well and clearly demonstrated how a student from an Adventist school can develop her faith-based, Christ-centered values and principles into a desire to make the world around her a little bit better.

Cada año, Rotary International patrocina un concurso juvenil de oratoria en el que estudiantes de high school compiten por becas, siguiendo una serie de criterios específicos. El concurso comienza en el ámbito de los clubes locales, y este año cuatro estudiantes de la clase de Oratoria y Debate de MBA prepararon discursos para presentarlos en una reunión del Rotary Club of Capitola/Aptos. A medida que avanza la competencia, los ganadores pasan al nivel de área y, posteriormente, a los niveles regional y distrital.

El tema de este año fue «Servicio por encima de uno mismo», y se pidió a los estudiantes que aplicaran la Prueba Cuádruple de Rotary al preparar su discurso: 1) debe ser verdad; 2) debe ser equitativo para todos los interesados; 3) debe crear buena voluntad y mejores amistades; y 4) debe ser beneficioso para todos los interesados. No se permitían apuntes, accesorios, elementos visuales ni personas que les indicaran qué decir. Además, para asegurar un ambiente imparcial, los estudiantes tenían prohibido presentarse o mencionar la escuela de procedencia hasta que concluyeran las exposiciones y la evaluación del jurado.

Los estudiantes de MBA que participaron fueron Symeona Resnick, Riley Brucato, Ivette Leyva-Chan y Lara Weberling. Nos alegra informar que Symeona y Riley obtuvieron el primer y el segundo lugar, respectivamente, en el nivel de club. La apasionada y emotiva presentación de Symeona se centró en el servicio mediante la defensa de los demás. «Mi argumento principal —dijo Symeona— es que la neutralidad y el silencio solo ayudan a quienes oprimen, no a quienes sufren la opresión». Se mantuvo erguida, habló con seguridad, expuso claramente sus argumentos y dejó al público completamente cautivado por su presentación. Cuando terminó, hubo un momento de silencio —casi de reverencia— antes de que el público estallara en un aplauso atronador.

A medida que la competencia avanzaba más allá del nivel de club, Symeona siguió demostrando a los demás lo que nosotros ya sabíamos de ella: es una joven extraordinariamente talentosa y elocuente. Sus dos presentaciones siguientes fueron en el nivel de área (que abarca la zona metropolitana de la Bahía) y en el nivel regional (que abarca todo el norte de California). Symeona ganó en ambos niveles y recibió más de 1,000 dólares en premios. 

Symeona llegó a MBA al comienzo de su segundo año de high school porque necesitaba un cambio de ambiente con respecto a su escuela anterior: no había problemas disciplinarios ni ninguna crisis en particular; simplemente necesitaba un cambio de ambiente. En aquel momento, Josh, el padre de Symeona, trabajaba para una empresa que arrienda instalaciones en el campus de Monterey Bay Academy. Desde su posición como observador, a Josh le gustaba lo que veía en los estudiantes y en el programa de MBA.

La familia Resnick procede de una tradición cristiana ortodoxa bastante conservadora y, durante nuestra primera entrevista, pronto se hizo evidente que compartíamos muchos valores y creencias. Como familia, necesitaban que MBA fuera una escuela que no contradijera sus valores cristianos conservadores; Symeona, por su parte, necesitaba una escuela cuya filosofía fundamental estuviera arraigada en el amor y la aceptación de Jesús. Encontraron ambas cosas y Symeona se matriculó.

Hoy, Symeona acaba de graduarse y encontró en MBA la comunidad escolar cristocéntrica que buscaba. Además, llegó a ser una colaboradora clave en la creación de esa comunidad para otros estudiantes que también buscaban algo diferente en una escuela.

Antes de participar en el concurso de oratoria de Rotary, Symeona podía mostrarse un tanto tímida e insegura; sin embargo, afirma que la clase de Oratoria y Debate de MBA despertó algo en ella que continuará desarrollando. «Gracias a esa experiencia, seguiré hablando de temas importantes —afirmó Symeona—, porque después varias personas se acercaron y me dijeron cuánto las había impactado mi discurso. Quiero producir un impacto positivo porque veo cosas en el mundo que sencillamente no están bien, y le corresponde a mi generación hacer algo al respecto».

¿Cómo terminó todo? Symeona avanzó a la final distrital (que abarca todo el estado de California), donde compitió con otro ganador de la región norte y dos ganadores de la región sur. MBA se enorgullece de informar que Symeona obtuvo el segundo lugar a nivel estatal en el concurso de oratoria juvenil de Rotary de este año y ganó, en total, casi 3,000 dólares en becas. Symeona representó dignamente a MBA y demostró claramente cómo una estudiante de una escuela adventista puede transformar sus valores y principios basados en la fe y centrados en Cristo en el deseo de mejorar, aunque sea un poco, el mundo que la rodea.
