the Ordination of Verlon Strauss
On March 12, Matheson Chapel on the campus of La Sierra University was filled with friends, family, and colleagues to celebrate a meaningful moment for the Southeastern California Conference (SECC): the ordination of SECC Treasurer Verlon Strauss.
While ordination in the Seventh-day Adventist Church is typically reserved for pastors, this service was conducted in special recognition to highlight the evident ministry of an individual in a non-pastoral role. Strauss’ ministry extends beyond his desk into faithful service in all areas of church life. Having served as treasurer for nearly 15 years, Strauss’ leadership has been evident not only in financial stewardship but through a ministry-minded approach to his role.
Strauss’ journey into church service began shortly after college with the General Conference Auditing Service. Although he briefly worked for Ernst & Young, he described a consistent desire to return to church service, eventually serving in key financial leadership roles at Loma Linda University before joining SECC. “I have worked for the church in some capacity over the last 36 years and have found it very rewarding,” he said.
Throughout his career, Strauss points to moments of transition as affirmations of his calling. “Being asked to serve in the various roles showed me that Someone else was looking out for me,” he shared. “Even my first hiring with the GC Auditing Service was somewhat of an affirmation that I was where I should be.”
As conference treasurer, Strauss describes his role as one that allows him to support ministry in practical ways. “I see the position of treasurer as one that does not just work numbers, but one that can make an impact on a broad spectrum of organizations,” he shared. In his service, Strauss has contributed his skills of accounting to ensure a financially healthy conference. From supporting churches that are completing building projects to assisting schools in need, he finds purpose in enabling ministry to thrive.
Jonathan Park, conference president, and Patty Marruffo, executive secretary, affirmed Strauss’ “heart for ministry and pastor-like mentality” during the ordination service. “I have always tried to pattern my life as one of service,” Strauss said. “What can I do to help those that are around me?” His ordination affirms a lifetime spent answering that call.

SECC celebra la ordenación de Verlon Strauss
El 12 de marzo, la Capilla Matheson en el campus de La Sierra University se llenó de amigos, familiares y colegas para celebrar un momento significativo para la Southeastern California Conference (SECC): la ordenación del tesorero de SECC, Verlon Strauss.
Aunque la ordenación en la Iglesia Adventista suele reservarse para pastores, ese servicio se realizó en especial reconocimiento para resaltar el ministerio evidente de una persona en un rol no pastoral. El ministerio de Strauss va más allá de su escritorio y se extiende al servicio fiel en todas las áreas de la vida eclesiástica. Tras haber ejercido como tesorero durante casi 15 años, el liderazgo de Strauss ha sido evidente no solo en la gestión financiera, sino también a través de un enfoque ministerial en su función.
La experiencia de Strauss hacia el servicio en la iglesia comenzó poco después de la universidad con el Servicio de Auditoría de la Conferencia General. Aunque trabajó brevemente en Ernst & Young, describió un deseo constante de volver al servicio religioso, llegando a desempeñar cargos clave de liderazgo financiero en Loma Linda University antes de unirse a SECC. “He trabajado para la iglesia de alguna manera durante los últimos 36 años y lo he encontrado muy gratificante”, dijo.
A lo largo de su carrera, Strauss señala los momentos de transición como afirmaciones de su vocación. “Que me pidieran servir en los distintos roles me mostró que alguien más estaba velando por mí”, compartió. “Incluso mi primera contratación con el Servicio de Auditoría de la CG fue en cierto modo una afirmación de que estaba donde debía estar”.
Como tesorero de la conferencia, Strauss describe su papel como uno que le permite apoyar el ministerio de manera práctica. “Veo el puesto de tesorero como uno que no solo trabaja con números, sino como uno que puede tener un impacto en un amplio espectro de organizaciones”, compartió. En su servicio, Strauss ha aportado sus habilidades contables para asegurar una conferencia financieramente saludable. Desde apoyar a iglesias que están completando proyectos de construcción hasta ayudar a escuelas necesitadas, encuentra propósito en permitir que el ministerio prospere.
Jonathan Park, presidente de la conferencia, y Patty Marruffo, secretaria ejecutiva, afirmaron el “corazón por el ministerio y la mentalidad pastoral” de Strauss durante el servicio de ordenación. “Siempre he intentado modelar mi vida como una de servicio”, dijo Strauss. “¿Qué puedo hacer para ayudar a quienes me rodean?” Su ordenación confirma una vida entera dedicada a responder a ese llamado.
