Sparks Church & Riverview Church Take the Gospel to the Neighborhood
There’s a moment every pastor knows—standing in a nearly empty room, wondering if anyone is coming, waiting and praying and hoping that God is going to do something.
Pastor Kevin Solomon, who leads the Sparks church, and Pastor Deirdré Solomon, who leads the Riverview Adventist church, know that feeling well. Leading two congregations with one shared burden for the Reno-Sparks community around them, they’d tried revivals, sent out mailers, and planned seminars. Doors were open, they were ready, but few or none showed up.
So they prayed, and God gave them a vision.
Instead of waiting for the community to come to them, they would go to the community. As Ellen White puts it, Jesus mingled with people, met their needs, won their confidence, and then invited them to follow Him (The Ministry of Healing, p. 143). That was the model—to do outreach Jesus’ way.
God opened a door at Marvel Way Apartments, a community of people who know what it means to start over, and the connection ran deeper than anyone could have anticipated. A beloved Riverview member named Jen had walked with people there through recovery, and when she passed away, her memorial was held on those very grounds. Family Fest was a continuation of seeds she had planted.
To make Family Fest a reality, event coordinator Lisia rallied the volunteers, Dave built the stage, the DJ kept energy high, prayer stations stood ready, and food was plentiful.
On the day of the event, over 300 people showed up—families with kids, neighbors who’d never stepped inside a church, people hungry for connection. Pastors Deirdré, Kevin, and Benjamin Carballo stepped to the stage and shared the gospel. The Reno-Sparks Hispanic congregation joined the two other churches, and what unfolded was a living picture of the body of Christ coming together. Someone asked about Sabbath, others wanted to learn about our churches, and one person summed it up simply: “We need more things like this in Reno.”
Residents shared they were genuinely touched, even surprised, that church people wanted to come to them. And the pastors remembered that Jesus didn’t wait for Zacchaeus to find his way to the temple but walked into his world and changed his life forever.
Jen would be proud.

Más de 300 personas acuden a Family Fun Fest
Iglesias de Sparks y Riverview levan el Evangelio al Barrio
Hay un momento que todo pastor conoce: estar en una sala casi vacía, preguntándose si alguien vendrá, esperando, orando y deseando que Dios haga algo.
El pastor Kevin Solomon, que dirige la iglesia Sparks, y la pastora Deirdré Solomon, que dirige la iglesia Riverview, conocen bien ese sentimiento. Liderando dos congregaciones con una carga por la comunidad de Reno-Sparks que les rodea, habían intentado reavivamientos, enviado cartas y organizado seminarios. Las puertas estaban abiertas, listos, pero pocos o ninguno apareció.
Así que oraron y Dios les dio una visión.
En lugar de esperar a que la comunidad acudiera a ellos, decidieron ir a la comunidad. Como dice Ellen White, Jesús se mezcló con la gente, satisfizo sus necesidades, ganó su confianza y luego les invitó a seguirle (El Ministerio de Sanación, p. 143). Ese era el modelo: hacer la evangelización a la manera de Jesús.

Jen, una miembro de Riverview, había acompañado a la gente allí durante su recuperación, y cuando falleció, su homenaje se celebró en ese lugar. Family Fest era una continuación de las semillas que ella había plantado.
Para hacer realidad Family Fest, la coordinadora del evento, Lisia, movilizó a los voluntarios, Dave construyó el escenario, un DJ mantuvo la energía elevada, las estaciones de oración estaban listas y la comida abundaba.
El día del evento, más de 300 personas acudieron: familias con niños, vecinos que nunca habían entrado en una iglesia, personas hambrientas de conexión. Los pastores Deirdré, Kevin y Benjamín Carballo subieron al escenario y compartieron el evangelio. La congregación hispana de Reno-Sparks se unió a las otras dos iglesias, y lo que se desarrolló fue una imagen viva del cuerpo de Cristo uniéndose. Alguien preguntó acerca del sábado, otros querían aprender de nuestra iglesia. Una persona lo resumió simplemente: “Necesitamos más cosas como esta en Reno.”
Los residentes compartieron que se sintieron genuinamente conmovidos, incluso sorprendidos, de que la gente de la iglesia quisiera acudir a ellos. Los pastores recordaron que Jesús no esperó a que Zaqueo encontrara el camino al templo, sino que entró en su mundo y cambió su vida para siempre.
Jen estaría orgullosa.
