Ministerial Department

Ministry is thriving throughout the territory of the Pacific Union Conference, in part because of the prayerful, faithful, and visionary service of our pastors, Bible teachers, chaplains, and conference ministerial directors, who are seeking after the heart of Jesus.

The Ministerial Department exists as a support for these men and women whom God has called into ministry. It is our aim to serve in an educational, inspirational, and consultive capacity to local conference ministerial directors and their gifted teams.

There are currently seven ministerial directors and two associate ministerial directors serving throughout the conferences. Leadership has prioritized the need to pour into the hearts and lives of those who are caring for, leading, and living life with our members and communities of faith. 

The Pastoral Reset

Five years ago, we were just beginning to emerge from the covid crisis during which pastors and churches were required to rapidly pivot into virtual church services and various other creative methods of worship as they ministered to their communities. 

As churches reopened, many already weary pastors became discouraged. Members had developed new rhythms in their Sabbath routine, and some continued to stay home to watch services remotely. Several pastors reported standing up to preach and teach in front of dwindling numbers of people in the pews. Plans, programs, and ideas that had brought success prior to the pandemic did not seem as effective in growing the churches and expanding the impact they had for the kingdom of God.

After the ministerial directors shared many of the stories they were hearing, we worked together to plan a virtual meeting for pastors, “The Pastoral Reset.” It was an entire afternoon livestreamed from the Loma Linda University church with the purpose of worship and praise. Speakers encouraged pastors to tend to their souls, and there were active chat groups where they could connect, share stories, laugh, cry, and engage in much prayer.

The ministerial directors conducted small breakout groups, lead prayer times, and actively kept the chat function robust. 

This resulted in the building of community and networking of relationships across conferences, which God continues to use. God was indeed at work!

The future is bright

Annual senior theology interviews are held in the fall with the graduating theology majors at the School of Divinity on the campus of La Sierra University and at the School of Religion on the campus of Pacific Union College. These events are organized by the dedicated faculty on those campuses, who host conference presidents and various other officers. Students have an opportunity to speak with leaders from each conference and share their stories and their heart for ministry.

A new practice began a few years ago in which we began to meet collectively with all the theology majors in an “Ask Us Anything” session prior to lunch. Candid questions are indeed asked, and we have been open and honest about the incredible privilege as well as the many challenges that pastors encounter.

The future of our church in the Pacific Union is bright as the Spirit of God uses these students.

Come apart for a while

The ministerial directors and associates spend their days (and often their evenings) counseling, praying with, equipping, and encouraging the pastors in their territory. They also grow weary. We have found rest by coming apart on retreats together for a few days each year. We have gone to the beautiful Pacific Union Conference campus and walked the paths of Pine Springs Ranch as we talk and pray together. 

These times of sharing and allowing God to fill our hearts and souls have been deeply meaningful as we walk this journey of supporting pastors together. He has led us beside still waters and we are refreshed. We re-commit to being the people of God before we do the work of God in these sacred moments.

In this work we are called to do, we are reminded: “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be” (1 Peter 5:2, NIV). 

El ministerio está prosperando en todo el territorio de Pacific Union Conference, en parte gracias al devoto, fiel y visionario servicio de nuestros pastores, obreros bíblicos, capellanes y directores ministeriales de las conferencias, quienes procuran tener el corazón de Jesús.

El Ministerial Department existe para apoyar a esos hombres y mujeres a quienes Dios ha llamado al ministerio. Nuestro objetivo es servir a los directores ministeriales de las conferencias y a sus talentosos equipos mediante la educación, la inspiración y el asesoramiento.

Actualmente, siete directores ministeriales y dos directores ministeriales asociados sirven en las distintas conferencias. Los dirigentes han dado prioridad a la necesidad de fortalecer el corazón y la vida de quienes cuidan, guían y comparten la vida con nuestros miembros y comunidades de fe.

The Pastoral Reset

Hace cinco años, apenas comenzábamos a salir de la crisis de la COVID-19, durante la cual los pastores y las iglesias tuvieron que adaptarse rápidamente a los cultos virtuales y a otros métodos creativos de adoración mientras atendían a sus comunidades.

Cuando las iglesias reabrieron, muchos pastores que ya estaban agotados se desanimaron. Los miembros habían desarrollado nuevos hábitos en su rutina sabática, y algunos continuaron quedándose en casa para ver los cultos a distancia. Varios pastores informaron que predicaban y enseñaban frente a una cantidad cada vez menor de personas en las bancas. Los planes, programas e ideas que habían dado buenos resultados antes de la pandemia ya no parecían tan eficaces para hacer crecer las iglesias y ampliar su impacto en favor del reino de Dios.

Después de que los directores ministeriales compartieran muchas de las historias que estaban escuchando, colaboramos en la planificación de una reunión virtual para pastores titulada «The Pastoral Reset». Fue una tarde completa transmitida en vivo desde la iglesia de Loma Linda University, con el propósito de adorar y alabar. Los oradores animaron a los pastores a cuidar su vida espiritual, y hubo grupos de conversación activos en los que podían conectarse, compartir historias, reír, llorar y dedicar mucho tiempo a la oración.

Los directores ministeriales dirigieron pequeños grupos de trabajo, condujeron momentos de oración y mantuvieron una participación dinámica en el chat.

Como resultado, se formó una comunidad y se estableció una red de relaciones entre las conferencias, que Dios continúa utilizando.

El futuro es prometedor

Cada otoño se realizan entrevistas anuales a los estudiantes del último año de teología que están por graduarse en la School of Divinity, en el campus de La Sierra University, y en la School of Religion, en el campus de Pacific Union College. Esos encuentros son organizados por el dedicado cuerpo docente de esos campus, que recibe a los presidentes de las conferencias y a diversos administradores. Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de conversar con los dirigentes de cada conferencia y compartir sus historias y su vocación por el ministerio.

Hace algunos años comenzó una nueva práctica: reunirnos con todos los estudiantes de teología en una sesión titulada «Pregunten lo que gusten» antes del almuerzo. Sin duda se formulan preguntas francas, y hemos hablado abierta y honestamente tanto del extraordinario privilegio como de los numerosos desafíos que afrontan los pastores.

El futuro de nuestra iglesia enla  Pacific Union es prometedor mientras el Espíritu de Dios obra por medio de esos estudiantes.

Apartémonos por un tiempo

Los directores ministeriales y sus asociados pasan los días —y con frecuencia las noches— aconsejando, orando con los pastores de su territorio, capacitándolos y animándolos. Ellos también se cansan. Hemos encontrado descanso al apartarnos juntos durante algunos días cada año para participar en varios retiros. Hemos ido al hermoso campus de Pacific Union College y recorrido los senderos de Pine Springs Ranch mientras conversamos y oramos juntos.

Esos momentos de diálogo, en los que permitimos que Dios llene nuestro corazón y nuestra alma, han sido profundamente significativos mientras recorremos juntos ese plan de apoyo a los pastores. Él nos ha guiado junto a aguas tranquilas y hemos sido renovados. En estos momentos sagrados, renovamos nuestro compromiso de ser el pueblo de Dios antes de realizar la obra de Dios.

En esta obra que hemos sido llamados a realizar, se nos recuerda: «Cuiden como pastores el rebaño de Dios que está a su cargo, velando por él; no porque tengan que hacerlo, sino porque están dispuestos, como Dios quiere que lo hagan» (1 Pedro 5:2).
