Making an Impact Through Volunteering

Now a junior biology major at Southern Adventist University, Alejandro Robles saw opportunities everywhere from the moment he set foot on campus. A member of the Loma Linda University church, Robles quickly became involved in service-centered activities at Southern. He enrolled in the biomedical program and was drawn to the Red Cross Club, which hosts quarterly blood drives in the community. He also joined the Student Association, where he helps distribute food through the school’s food pantry and submits proposals to improve campus life.

In the Latin American Club, he helps host Sabbath services for several local churches and participates in community outreach activities such as assembling and delivering beds for local children.

“I believe service is an important part of education because it complements what we learn through academics at Southern,” Robles said. “Serving others helps us grow in leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that are needed in everyday life and future careers.”

Robles had always been interested in medicine, but his interest was elevated to the next level when he participated in a 2025 medical mission trip to Cajamarca, Peru, through Southern’s Evangelistic Resource Center (ERC). The ERC in Southern’s School of Religion prepares student volunteers to share the gospel and sends them worldwide on short-term mission trips.

During the first week of the trip, the group operated a medical clinic—treating infections, removing lesions, and addressing many other medical needs. Robles operated a station where he took patients’ vital signs and served as a translator between patients and medical providers. The clinics were supposed to serve 120 people a day but often helped up to 300 patients. During the second week, each student preached an evangelistic series at a different church, and 19 people were baptized from Robles’ group.

He was eager to go on an ERC mission trip again in 2026, this time to Lima, Peru. As a result, his supervisors trusted him with additional responsibilities. Before the clinics began, he led the students in setting up the materials. Instead of staying at one station throughout the day, he circulated and stepped in whenever things became busy or chaotic, helping organize patient flow and making sure everything ran as smoothly as possible.

“I plan to go again in the summer of 2027,” he said. “These medical mission trips with Southern have broadened my perspective. I’ve discovered how much I enjoy performing procedures and—even more importantly—building relationships with patients. Being able to talk with them, answer their questions, and help them feel less worried has been so rewarding.”
