On Sunday, June 14, in its annual outdoor ceremony on Founders’ Green, La Sierra University conferred degrees on 378 graduates and sent them into the next phases of their lives with words of faith and inspiration, encouraging them to empower others.
In remarks to the graduates, La Sierra University President Christon Arthur called on them to leave their marks and live with distinction.
“As you leave us after graduation today, the road ahead may not be easy,” he said. “You will be criticized because you stand with the vulnerable. Stand with the vulnerable anyway. You will be criticized because you do the work of justice. Do the work of justice anyway. You will be criticized because you try to lift people up. Lift people up anyway.
“Criticism is not an indication that you are wrong. It simply means you are different. Be different anyway,” Arthur said.
The university’s 378 graduates earned a total of 381 degrees collectively from the School of Education, the H.M.S. Richards Divinity School, the Zapara School of Business, and the College of Arts & Sciences. The Class of 2026 received 270 bachelor’s, 79 master’s and 16 doctoral degrees. They represented 20 countries and 16 faith traditions and ranged in age from 21 to 68. Approximately 4,000 family members and friends attended the annual event to cheer the graduates.
California State Senator Sabrina Cervantes, who served as commencement speaker, called upon La Sierra University’s graduates to use their achievements and opportunities as doorways through which they can help others succeed.
In her address titled “Education: The Foundation of Opportunity,” Cervantes spoke of the empowering effect of education and used her own life as an illustration.
She also specifically addressed first-generation graduates and former foster youth, noting the significance of their achievements.
“Your accomplishments carry extraordinary significance,” Cervantes said. “You entered spaces that previous generations in your family may never have had the opportunity to enter…. Because of your courage and determination, you are becoming the example. That is a legacy that will outlive this ceremony. That is the power of education.”
Arthur presented annual graduation awards to five students, faculty, and staff members. He presented the Presidential Medallion Award for Distinguished Service to Cervantes, in recognition of her public service, noting its alignment with the university’s mission to serve others.
Barbara Asare, originally from Ghana, West Africa, earned a Ph.D. in instructional leadership from the School of Education. Nearly 50 people attended graduation to celebrate her achievement.
“This graduation ceremony, it’s also a reflection on the journey,” she said. “It’s been full of challenges and, by God’s grace, today reflects the goodness and the greatness and the faithfulness of God, and I am so excited to celebrate.”

Los 378 graduados de La Sierra reciben un llamado a abrir puertas y hacer justicia
El domingo 14 de junio, durante su ceremonia anual al aire libre en Founders’ Green, La Sierra University confirió títulos a 378 graduandos y, con palabras de fe e inspiración, los envió a emprender las siguientes etapas de su vida, animándolos a ayudar a otros a alcanzar su potencial.
En sus palabras dirigidas a los graduandos, el presidente de La Sierra University, Christon Arthur, los exhortó a dejar huella y a vivir de manera ejemplar.
«Al dejarnos hoy después de su graduación, es posible que el camino que tienen por delante no sea fácil —dijo—. Los criticarán porque se ponen de parte de los vulnerables. Aun así, pónganse de parte de los vulnerables. Los criticarán porque trabajan en favor de la justicia. Aun así, trabajen en favor de la justicia. Los criticarán porque procuran ayudar a otros a salir adelante. Aun así, ayúdenlos a salir adelante.
»Las críticas no indican que estén equivocados. Simplemente significan que son diferentes. Aun así, sean diferentes», expresó Arthur.
Los 378 graduados de la universidad obtuvieron en conjunto un total de 381 títulos de la School of Education, la H.M.S. Richards Divinity School, la Zapara School of Business y el College of Arts & Sciences. La clase de 2026 recibió 270 títulos de licenciatura, 79 de maestría y 16 de doctorado. Sus integrantes representaban a 20 países y 16 tradiciones religiosas, y sus edades oscilaban entre los 21 y los 68 años. Aproximadamente 4,000 familiares y amigos asistieron al evento anual para celebrar a los graduandos.
La senadora estatal de California Sabrina Cervantes, oradora de la ceremonia de graduación, exhortó a los graduandos de La Sierra University a convertir sus logros y oportunidades en puertas que ayuden a otros a alcanzar el éxito.
En su discurso, titulado «La educación: fundamento de las oportunidades», Cervantes habló del poder transformador de la educación y puso su propia vida como ejemplo.
También se dirigió de manera particular a los primeros graduados universitarios de sus familias y a quienes habían vivido en hogares de acogida, destacando la importancia de sus logros.
«Sus logros tienen una trascendencia extraordinaria —dijo Cervantes—. Ustedes entraron en espacios a los que quizá las generaciones anteriores de sus familias nunca tuvieron la oportunidad de acceder…. Gracias a su valor y determinación, se están convirtiendo en el ejemplo. Ese es un legado que perdurará mucho más allá de esta ceremonia. Ese es el poder de la educación».
Arthur entregó los premios anuales de graduación a cinco estudiantes e integrantes del cuerpo docente y del personal. Asimismo, otorgó a Cervantes la Medalla Presidencial por Servicio Distinguido, en reconocimiento a su servicio público, y señaló que concuerda con la misión de la universidad de servir a los demás.

«Esta ceremonia de graduación también es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el camino recorrido —dijo—. Ha estado lleno de desafíos y, por la gracia de Dios, este día refleja la bondad, la grandeza y la fidelidad de Dios. Me emociona mucho poder celebrarlo».
