Every organization needs direction and purpose. As part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Southern California Conference (SCC) joins in the church’s mission of proclaiming the gospel to all people with a Christ-centered message of hope and wholeness. But how we do that is unique to our context and territory.
In August 2024, “Exalting Christ by cultivating healthy churches and schools” was established as the SCC mission statement. But it’s important that we go beyond just writing a mission statement on paper. At SCC, our mission is strengthened with a framework that outlines essential—but not exhaustive—characteristics that define healthy churches and schools.

“A healthy church doesn’t happen by accident; it is cultivated through biblical principles and Spirit-led leadership,” said SCC President John H. Cress. “It is hard to target health in a congregation if we don’t know how to identify a healthy church.”
This concept was the foundation for outlining a list of characteristics that define a healthy church. And the schools weren’t far behind. After defining eight characteristics of a healthy church, Cress enlisted Wayne Dunbar, SCC’s vice president for education, to carry the process forward for schools.
Dunbar researched the defining features of thriving schools—what traits do they all have in common? He took the data he compiled to the principals, and together they compiled a list of 10 characteristics that define a healthy school in SCC.
“The important thing about this is that it’s intentional and it’s purposeful,” Dunbar said. “It’s not aimless. I think maybe, sometimes in the past, we’ve had a little bit of aimlessness in where we’ve headed, and I’m excited about what this is going to do for our schools.”
Along the lines of exploring the practical outworking of our mission, our Cultivate podcast was launched this February, featuring as hosts Cress and Dunbar. The premiere episodes explored each of the characteristics for churches and schools, and subsequent episodes will cover projects and initiatives that exemplify our mission.
“May our churches be marked by these eight characteristics—not as boxes to check, but as a vision to pursue,” Cress said. “Let’s plant, water, and cultivate healthy churches so we may realize our vision of spiritually thriving churches with flourishing faith, caring for their communities, and inspiring individuals to grow in and share Christ’s love.”
“It can change everything,” Dunbar said of the impact these characteristics can have on a church and school. “Because, if you can change one life, if you can change one heart, if you can change a student’s mindset, then who’s to say what that student can then change for our world?”

Características esenciales para cultivar nuestra misión
Toda organización necesita dirección y propósito. Como parte de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día, la Southern California Conference (SCC) participa en la misión de la iglesia de proclamar el evangelio a todas las personas mediante un mensaje de esperanza y plenitud centrado en Cristo. Sin embargo, la manera como lo hacemos tiene que ver de forma particular a nuestro contexto y territorio.
En agosto de 2024, «Exaltar a Cristo mediante el cultivo de iglesias y escuelas saludables» fue adoptada como declaración de misión de la SCC. Sin embargo, es importante que no nos limitemos a escribir una declaración de misión sobre el papel. En SCC, nuestra misión se fortalece mediante un marco que presenta características esenciales —aunque no exhaustivas— que definen a las iglesias y a las escuelas saludables.

«Una iglesia saludable no surge por accidente; se cultiva mediante principios bíblicos y un liderazgo guiado por el Espíritu —dijo John H. Cress, presidente de la SCC—. Es difícil procurar la salud de una congregación si no sabemos cómo identificar a una iglesia saludable».
Ese concepto sirvió de base para elaborar una lista de características que definen a una iglesia saludable. Poco después se inició el mismo proceso para las escuelas. Tras definir ocho características de una iglesia saludable, Cress pidió a Wayne Dunbar, vicepresidente de Educación de la SCC, que llevara adelante el proceso para las escuelas.
Dunbar investigó los rasgos distintivos de las escuelas prósperas: ¿qué características comparten? Presentó a los directores los datos que había recopilado y juntos elaboraron una lista de diez características que definen a una escuela saludable en la SCC.
«Lo importante es que esto se hace con intención y propósito —dijo Dunbar—. No carece de rumbo. Creo que quizá en el pasado no siempre tuvimos claridad sobre la dirección que debíamos seguir y me entusiasma lo que esto hará por nuestras escuelas».
Con el propósito de explorar la aplicación práctica de nuestra misión, en febrero se lanzó el podcast Cultivate, presentado por Cress y Dunbar. Los primeros episodios analizaron cada una de las características de las iglesias y las escuelas, y los episodios posteriores abordarán proyectos e iniciativas que ejemplifican nuestra misión.
«Que nuestras iglesias se distingan por esas ocho características, no como casillas que debemos marcar, sino como una visión que debemos perseguir —dijo Cress—. Plantemos, reguemos y cultivemos iglesias saludables para hacer realidad nuestra visión de iglesias espiritualmente prósperas, con una fe floreciente, que atiendan a sus comunidades e inspiren a las personas a crecer en el amor de Cristo y compartirlo».
«Puede cambiarlo todo —dijo Dunbar sobre el impacto que esas características pueden tener en una iglesia y una escuela—. Porque, si uno puede cambiar una vida, un corazón o la manera de pensar de un estudiante, ¿quién puede decir hasta dónde llegará el cambio que ese estudiante produzca en nuestro mundo?».
