Echo Youth

Twice a year, Echo youth ministry from The Place Adventist Fellowship church meets for an eight-week series in the fall and spring for worship, teaching, and fellowship. This ministry is led almost entirely by youth who attend Newbury Park Adventist Academy (NPAA). 

This doesn’t mean that only NPAA students go to Echo—roughly 46 percent of the people who come to Echo do not attend NPAA. 

“I love how students from other schools step into a new environment to experience Christianity and connect with people that they have never met,” said Jenna, community service youth leader.

Including Jenna, there are eight youth leaders who help Echo run smoothly every Friday. Some of their roles include social media and outreach, fundraising, music, community service, and vespers. Without them, this organization would not be able to work.

Urijah Saenz, youth pastor of The Place, leads the ministry. His idea for Echo was to “recognize the personal and spiritual needs of this new generation and then to train and empower young leaders to build a community that fulfills those needs.” 

The theme for this last season was “Standing Firm While Standing Out,” showing youth how to tangibly support their faith. Some topics included, “Why do we have Sabbath on Saturday?” and “What’s the difference between cussing and cursing?” Echo works to build on the foundation of beliefs the youth learned as kids and teaches them to defend their faith. As Ellen G. White wrote, “The Lord has appointed the youth to be his helping hand” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 64). She specifies the importance of helping the youth in our community become strong defenders of Christianity and messengers of the good news of God. 

Weekly attendance at Echo averages about 27 people. Students from Glendale Adventist Academy and the youth from Canoga Park church have attended, plus students from public schools such as Newbury Park High School, Camarillo High School, and Agoura High School have joined. With this variety of people, one might worry that there’d be exclusion or situations where people seem to be left out. But what’s interesting about Echo is that there is a point in the evening when the youth are separated into groups with different individuals they may not know for a chance to get to know new people. 

Echo just started in the spring of 2025, and it is getting better every season. Pastor Saenz and the youth leaders are working hard to make sure everyone has a good Friday evening to welcome us into the Sabbath. With the music and sermon, Echo is really a growing community that is striving to make a change in our youth.

Dos veces al año, el ministerio juvenil Echo de la iglesia The Place Adventist Fellowship se reúne en otoño y primavera para una serie de ocho semanas para adorar, enseñar y compartir convivencias. Ese ministerio está dirigido casi en su totalidad por jóvenes que asisten a la Newbury Park Adventist Academy (NPAA). 

Eso no significa que solo los estudiantes de NPAA vayan a Echo: aproximadamente el 46 por ciento de las personas que asisten a Echo no asisten a NPAA. 

“Me encanta cómo estudiantes de otras escuelas entran en un nuevo entorno para experimentar el cristianismo y conectarse con personas que nunca han conocido”, dijo Jenna, líder juvenil de servicio comunitario.

Además de Jenna, hay ocho líderes juveniles que ayudan a Echo a funcionar cada viernes. Algunos de sus roles incluyen redes sociales y divulgación, recaudación de fondos, música, servicio comunitario y culto vespertino. Sin ellos, esta organización no podría funcionar.

Algunos temas incluían: “¿Por qué tenemos guardamos el sábado?” y “¿Cuál es la diferencia entre ser grosero y maldecir?” La función de Echo es establecer sobre la base de las creencias que los jóvenes aprendieron de niños y enseñarles a defender su fe. Como escribió Ellen G. White, “El Señor ha designado a los jóvenes para que acudan en su ayuda” (Testimonios para la Iglesia, vol. 7, p. 65). Ella especifica la importancia de ayudar a los jóvenes de nuestra comunidad a convertirse en firmes defensores del cristianismo y mensajeros de las buenas nuevas. 

La asistencia semanal a Echo promedia unas 27 personas. Han asistido estudiantes de Glendale Adventist Academy y los jóvenes de la iglesia de Canoga Park, además de alumnos de escuelas públicas como Newbury Park High School, Camarillo High School y Agoura High School. Con ese tipo de personas, uno podría preocuparse de que haya exclusión o situaciones en las que parezca que la gente queda excluida. Pero lo interesante de Echo es que hay un momento por la noche en que los jóvenes se dividen en grupos con diferentes individuos que quizá no conocen, para tener la oportunidad de conocerse. 

Echo empezó en la primavera de 2025 y mejora cada temporada. El pastor Sáenz y los líderes juveniles están trabajando duro para asegurarse de que todos tengan un buen viernes por la noche para dar la bienvenida al sábado. Con la música y el sermón, Echo es realmente una comunidad en crecimiento que se esfuerza por cambiar a nuestra juventud.
