On June 29, 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court handed the Church State Council’s client, Gerald Groff, a 9-0 decision. The Court’s ruling restored robust protection for workers of all faiths, including Sabbath-keepers, needing religious accommodation. The Council’s president, Alan Reinach, had been part of a 30-year effort to secure this very change in the law. Groff was a rural route mail carrier in Pennsylvania Amish country when the postal service entered a contract with Amazon for Sunday package delivery. A devout evangelical Christian, Groff refused to work on Sundays.
How did the Council come to represent Groff on the other side of the country? This question is part of a much larger story about the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s enviable reputation for religious freedom advocacy. Since he began as director of Public Affairs & Religious Liberty in the 1990s, Reinach has been actively involved in both local and national legal circles advocating for religious freedom. Groff was referred to the Council by a prominent Christian organization.
The win in Groff’s case has brought considerable attention to the Council’s advocacy for workers who suffer religious discrimination. The Council has become the nationally recognized leader in handling such cases. This has led to necessary restructuring and expansion. The Council has added two new attorneys, Patrick Dillon and Naomi Eshoo, to help handle the increased case load.
Meanwhile, the Council bid farewell to Dennis Seaton, who served faithfully as government relations director in Sacramento since 2012, and who was instrumental at that time in lobbying for Workplace Religious Freedom in California. Seaton’s post was taken up by Stephen Allred, an attorney and ordained minister, who has hit the ground running, starting up the Church State Council Fellowship program for college and grad school students, publishing the Church + State Dispatch, a monthly religious liberty newsletter, as well as hosting podcasts and local church religious liberty seminars on behalf of the Council. Allred is also focused on his role of developing relationships with government officials and interfaith leaders within the Pacific Union territory. Natalie Eva, legislative assistant, continues to ably assist our Northern California office with her experience and expertise.
Among the many facets of the Council’s education efforts have been the publication and widespread distribution of brochures, such as Do I Have to Work on Sabbath?, Written in the Heart, and a timely and critically important article, Christian Nationalism: A Return to Christendom? Christian Nationalism in relation to Bible prophecy has also been a central focus of sermons and seminars.
Finally, we bid a fond farewell to Loritha McDuffie, who served as Reinach’s assistant for more than 25 years, since 1999. Looking to the future, the Council is able to serve Spanish-speaking clients through our associate, Pastor William Davis, and has even added Portuguese with Simone Buttler, who took on the important task McDuffie left behind.
The Council’s focus remains on ministry to those suffering religious discrimination, on education about the increasingly critical and divisive issues of religious freedom, on monitoring legislative challenges, and on our preaching ministry in the churches, helping Adventists understand the prophetic significance of these many developments as we look for and hasten the return of Christ.
