Boots, Bulls, and Prayer

Youth Ministry Turns a Sabbath Into a Night to Remember

As the sun set over Las Vegas, the parking lot at Vegas Valley Adventist Academy filled with cowboy hats, flannel shirts, and a whole lot of anticipation. The youth ministry team of Living Water Fil-Am had invited the whole church for sunset worship. That was just the opening for a full-blown country night celebration, complete with a mechanical bull, a jellybean-guessing jar, and a lineup of games and activity stations that kept kids, teens, and grandparents moving around for three hours.

The evening was the grand finale of a special program that had begun in the morning with a worship service planned and led by the youth. Pastor Delberth Castillo, associate youth director for Nevada-Utah Conference (NUC), preached that morning about the place the youth generation holds in the mission of the church.

One of the most popular stops of the night was the “Wanted” station, where guests were surprised to see their photos turned into hilarious old-West wanted posters. Meanwhile, tables filled with food brought by church members turned the courtyard into one big potluck, and the line for the mechanical bull never seemed to get shorter.

Mario Navarro, pastor of Living Water Fil-Am, said the night proved what the church already is. “We have an amazing church family, always happy to serve, happy to be part of the mission.” Pastor Michael Jenkins, NUC youth director, also attended the celebration and praised the youth team for pulling it all together.

For Mary Moura, the youth leader who organized the day alongside her associate, Sofia Sharpe, the night was never about the bull or the boots. “Every one of them led some part of the special program. This is one more proof that our youth are ready and willing to serve, and we cannot miss the opportunity to trust them now with the mission.”

The night closed the way it began: in prayer, thanking God that everything, down to the last jellybean, had gone smoothly. Moura and Sharpe are now looking ahead to the next event: the GYC, in Salt Lake City this December.
