The Community Services outreach ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is a wholistic ministry of caring. It is the physical arms, legs, and feet of the church, providing for the physical, mental, social, and spiritual needs of people. Community services centers throughout the Pacific Union have been established to assist men, women, and children in and around their local communities in their time of need. Like Jesus, the Pacific Union’s community services ministry shares God’s love in a practical and tangible way.
Preparing for the next disaster
Disaster Response Ministries is designed to prepare our members to serve when disaster strikes. One of the hard lessons of recent years is that our region is prone to massive, catastrophic wildfires and other disasters. In the past five years alone, fires have destroyed major communities in both California and Hawaii.
The major fires in Maui and across Southern California were sobering moments—but those disasters awakened something important. Conferences have begun developing real strategies, training their members, and preparing for the next event. Partnerships with local Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) are forming. We are not yet where we need to be, but the work has begun, and that is a real step forward.
Our teams have also begun earning certifications in Emotional and Spiritual Care and in Warehouse Management. The North American Division, along with our own Charlene Sargent, is helping our teams prepare for the next major disaster event. Experience has taught us that if you wait until the disaster hits to get ready, you are already too late—you must get ready now. Our preparation is not yet complete, but the planning and preparation are well underway.
Moving forward
Throughout our five states and seven conferences, we are actively focused on community services and disaster preparedness. In all this work, we follow Christ’s example of reaching out to those who are so often overlooked or marginalized.
