Eighty Years of Joy and Purpose in the Desert
It takes a special kind of heart to answer the call to serve in the high desert of the Southwest. For those who step onto our school grounds, it quickly becomes clear that the work being done here goes beyond a standard daily educational routine. At Holbrook Indian School (HIS), our work has never been just a job; it is a sacred ministry, a shared calling, and a labor of love. There is a profound joy that comes from answering God’s lead, and that spirit of service is woven into every corner of our school. When our labor is anchored in a divine purpose, even the most mundane daily tasks are transformed into acts of joy.
Looking ahead to the upcoming school year, we are filled with excitement and gratitude as we begin our 80th year of serving Native American students next to the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the United States. For eight decades, God has faithfully sustained this ministry through every season of change. Reaching this incredible milestone reminds us of the beautiful promise found in Galatians 6:9: “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart” (NKJV).
While the world has transformed significantly since our doors first opened, our core purpose remains unchanged. Our goal is to provide a steady foundation of stability, opportunity, and a true sense of belonging to every student who walks onto our campus, ensuring they know they are valued members of our HIS family.
To achieve this, HIS operates on a unique educational framework called MAPS, which nurtures the whole child by emphasizing the Mental, Academic/Artistic, Physical, and Spiritual growth of our youth. This wholistic approach means that learning extends far beyond the four walls of a traditional classroom. A cornerstone of this mission is our dedicated campus counseling program, which provides students with a safe, confidential space to process challenges, build emotional resilience, and find genuine healing from various difficulties they have already experienced in their young lives.
Whether a student is analyzing literature, expressing their heritage through pottery, learning the value of hard work in the agricultural greenhouses, or discovering emotional connections through our horsemanship program, they are being equipped for a bright future. Our dedicated staff finds joy in helping these young people uncover their God-given potential, celebrate cultural preservation, and navigate their individual journeys toward lifelong wellness.
Our ministry cannot walk alone. It thrives because of a large, dedicated family of individual supporters, mission groups, and volunteers who regularly pour their time, energy, and financial donations into our campus. From painting dormitories to mentoring students to sponsoring programs, every contribution leaves a lasting legacy. Un llamado sagrado: 80 años de gozo y propósito en el desierto
Se necesita un corazón especial para responder al llamado a servir en el desierto de las tierras altas del suroeste. Para quienes llegan a nuestro plantel, pronto resulta evidente que la labor que se realiza aquí va mucho más allá de la rutina educativa cotidiana. En Holbrook Indian School (HIS), nuestra labor nunca ha sido simplemente un empleo; es un ministerio sagrado, un llamado compartido y una obra de amor. Responder a la dirección de Dios produce un gozo profundo y ese espíritu de servicio está entretejido en cada rincón de nuestra escuela. Cuando nuestra labor está arraigada en un propósito divino, aun las tareas cotidianas más comunes se transforman en actos de gozo.
Al anticipar el próximo año escolar, nos llenan el entusiasmo y la gratitud al comenzar nuestro 80º año de servicio a estudiantes indígenas norteamericanos junto a la Nación Navajo, la reserva indígena más grande de Estados Unidos. Durante ocho décadas, Dios ha sostenido fielmente este ministerio a través de cada etapa de cambio. Alcanzar este extraordinario hito nos recuerda la hermosa promesa de Gálatas 6:9: «No nos cansemos, pues, de hacer bien; porque a su tiempo segaremos, si no desmayamos».
Aunque el mundo se ha transformado considerablemente desde que abrimos nuestras puertas, nuestro propósito fundamental permanece inalterable. Nuestra meta es ofrecer a cada estudiante que llega a nuestro plantel un fundamento firme de estabilidad y oportunidades, así como un verdadero sentido de pertenencia, y asegurarnos de que sepa que es un miembro valioso de la familia de HIS.
Para lograrlo, HIS aplica un singular modelo educativo llamado MAPS, que promueve el desarrollo integral del estudiante al hacer hincapié en el crecimiento mental, académico y artístico, físico y espiritual de nuestros jóvenes. Ese enfoque integral significa que el aprendizaje se extiende mucho más allá de las cuatro paredes de un aula tradicional. Una piedra angular de esa misión es nuestro dedicado programa de orientación en el plantel, que ofrece a los estudiantes un espacio seguro y confidencial donde pueden procesar sus dificultades, desarrollar resiliencia emocional y encontrar una sanidad auténtica de las diversas experiencias difíciles que ya han vivido a su corta edad.
Ya sea que un estudiante analice una obra literaria, exprese su herencia cultural mediante la alfarería, aprenda el valor del trabajo arduo en los invernaderos agrícolas o descubra vínculos emocionales mediante nuestro programa de equitación, está adquiriendo las herramientas necesarias para un futuro prometedor. Nuestro dedicado personal encuentra gozo al ayudar a esos jóvenes a descubrir el potencial que Dios les ha dado, celebrar la preservación de su cultura y recorrer sus propios caminos hacia un bienestar duradero.
Nuestro ministerio no puede avanzar solo. Prospera gracias a una amplia y dedicada familia de colaboradores, grupos misioneros y voluntarios que aportan regularmente su tiempo, energía y donaciones económicas a nuestro plantel.
