Pastor Mike Leno Retires from Pastoral Ministry
After eight meaningful years of ministry at Azure Hills church, Associate Pastor for Worship and Nurture Michael Leno was celebrated for retirement this June. Although entering retirement, Leno will continue serving in a part-time capacity.
Leno’s journey in ministry spans 48 years, beginning in June 1978 when he started as an intern pastor directly after graduating from Walla Walla College as a double major in music and theology. His path has taken him across the country, serving congregations in Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, and Georgia before arriving in California in 2006.
Throughout his nearly five decades of ministry, Leno has served in diverse roles—as an eighth-grade teacher, religion editor and announcer at a radio station, and church planter.
Continuing his commitment to theological education, Leno earned his MA in religion with highest honors from the La Sierra School of Divinity in 2011 while pastoring the Ontario church. He received the President’s Award for his master’s thesis, Hell Under Construction: The Fate of the Wicked in 2nd Temple Jewish Literature. Before joining Azure Hills in 2018, he served as lead pastor of the Ontario and Palm Springs churches in the Southeastern California Conference.
“In my 48 years, this is the best job I’ve had,” Leno shared when reflecting on his time at Azure Hills. Among his most cherished memories are marrying Starla, who pastored alongside Mike, teaching in Grace Notes Sabbath School and LIFT, leading small group studies on the teachings of Jesus, and reviving the church orchestra. “I love working with our staff and volunteers at Azure Hills,” he said. “For that reason, it is hard to retire.”
As Leno transitions, he looks forward to collaborating more with Starla in teaching and writing, spending precious time with his children and grandchildren, and enjoying long bike rides. Tara VinCross, senior pastor of Azure Hills, shared, “Working with Mike has been such a gift. He is Jesus-centered, an encourager, a deep thinker, and someone who cares for people with the love of God. His presence on our team has blessed not only me, but our entire church family.”
When asked about Scripture that has sustained him throughout his ministry, Leno shared two passages that capture the heart of his pastoral calling:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV).
“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13, NIV).

48 años en el ministerio: Mike Leno se retira del ministerio pastoral
Tras ocho años significativos de ministerio en la iglesia de Azure Hills, el pastor asociado Michael Leno fue celebrado por su jubilación este junio. Aunque se jubila, Leno seguirá sirviendo a tiempo parcial.
El trayectoria ministerial de Leno abarca 48 años, comenzando en junio de 1978, cuando comenzó como pastor interno justo después de graduarse en Walla Walla College en música y teología. Entre sus recuerdos más preciados están casarse con Starla, que pastoreó con Mike, enseñar en Grace Notes Sabbath School y LIFT, dirigir estudios en pequeños grupos sobre las enseñanzas de Jesús y revivir la orquesta de la iglesia. “Me encanta trabajar con nuestro personal y voluntarios en Azure Hills”, dijo. “Por eso, me es difícil retirarme”.
Mientras Leno hace su transición, espera colaborar más con Starla en la enseñanza y pasar tiempo valioso con sus hijos y nietos, y disfrutar de largas rutas en bicicleta. Tara VinCross, pastora de Azure Hills, compartió: “Trabajar con Mike ha sido un regalo enorme. Está centrado en Jesús, es un animador, un pensador profundo y alguien que se preocupa por las personas con amor a Dios. Su presencia en nuestro equipo no solo me ha bendecido a mí, sino a toda nuestra familia de iglesia».
Cuando le preguntaron sobre un pasaje de las Escrituras que le han sostenido a lo largo de su ministerio, Leno compartió dos pasajes que capturan el corazón de su vocación pastoral: “Porque por gracia ustedes han sido salvados mediante la fe. Esto no procede de ustedes, sino que es el regalo de Dios y no por obras, para que nadie se jacte” (Efesios 2:8-9). “Escribo estas cosas a ustedes que creen en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen vida eterna” (1 Juan 5:13).
