On Saturday, Jan. 31, a meaningful milestone was celebrated as Elder Sandra Fermin was officially ordained into gospel ministry. Surrounded by family, friends, and church members, the ordination service took place at La Sierra University’s Hole Memorial Auditorium, marking a full circle moment in her call to pastoral ministry.
Sandra did not set out to become a pastor. Her focus was on a music degree when her call to ministry happened during her third year at La Sierra University. She had served as spiritual vice president, participated in numerous church internships, and was involved in music recitals in Hole Memorial Auditorium. Fermin’s ministry was affirmed in 2018 when she was hired by the conference and sent to the theological seminary at Andrews University. Reflecting on pivotal moments along the way, she points to her hiring by the Southeastern California Conference as a defining experience. “That day I cried so much in gratitude, in exhaustion, and in utter shock,” she said. “The decision I had taken to pursue ministry was 100 percent true and not in my head.” She also credits the support of mentors, friends, and peers who believed in her calling before she fully embraced it herself.
For over two years, Fermin has pastored at the Loma Linda Filipino church. Despite being a Latina pastor, she has recognized her opportunity for cross-cultural ministry. “I felt empowered to be able to understand another church culture and for me to still embrace my own authenticity in it,” Fermin said.
She acknowledges that ministry comes with its own set of challenges. “The reality is that ministry is mental, spiritual, and physical gymnastics,” Fermin shared. “There’s a burden and expectation that church members and society places on us pastors. We’re not perfect.” Emphasizing the importance of balance, she added that maintaining healthy boundaries, prioritizing rest, and seeking support—including therapy—have been essential.
At the heart of Fermin’s ministry is a deep commitment to walking alongside others in their spiritual journeys. “As a pastor, I can’t fix anything in their lives,” she said, “but I can be a witness to how they view God, embrace His love, and embody it with others.”
Passionate about ministering to people in life’s most critical moments, she is pursuing board certification in chaplaincy. “The reality is people need to feel seen and understood. I desire to be continuously trauma-informed and be able to provide a wholistic ministry wherever I go,” she stated. This ministry of commitment to helping others feel seen, understood, and valued exemplifies the heart of Jesus and the affirmation of her ordination.

El sábado 31 de enero se celebró un hito significativo cuando la pastora Sandra Fermin fue oficialmente ordenada al ministerio. Rodeada de familiares, amigos y miembros de iglesia, el servicio de ordenación tuvo lugar en el Hole Memorial Auditorium de La Sierra University, marcando un momento de cierre en su llamado al ministerio.
Sandra no tenía la intención de ser pastora. Su enfoque estaba en una carrera de música cuando su llamado al ministerio surgió durante su tercer año en La Sierra University. Había ejercido como vicepresidenta espiritual, participado en numerosas prácticas en la iglesia y participado en recitales musicales en el Hole Memorial Auditorium. El ministerio de Fermin fue reafirmado en 2018 cuando fue contratada por la conferencia y enviada al seminario teológico de Andrews University. Reflexionando sobre momentos clave a lo largo del camino, señala su contratación por parte de la Southeastern California Conference como una experiencia definitoria. «Ese día lloré tanto de gratitud, de agotamiento y de absoluto shock», dijo. «La decisión que tomé de dedicarme al ministerio era 100% cierta y no estaba en mi cabeza». También reconoce el apoyo de mentores, amigos y compañeros que creyeron en su vocación antes de que ella la asumiera plenamente.
Durante más de dos años, Fermin ha sido pastora en la iglesia filipina de Loma Linda. A pesar de ser pastora latina, ha reconocido su oportunidad para el ministerio intercultural. «Me sentí empoderada al poder entender otra cultura y a aun así abrazar mi propia autenticidad en ella», dijo Fermín.
Reconoce que el ministerio conlleva sus propios desafíos. «La realidad es que el ministerio es una gimnasia mental, espiritual y física», compartió Fermín. «Hay una carga y una expectativa que los miembros de iglesia y la sociedad imponen sobre nosotros, los pastores. No somos perfectos». Enfatizando la importancia del equilibrio, añadió que mantener límites saludables, priorizar el descanso y buscar apoyo —incluida la terapia— ha sido esencial.
En el corazón del ministerio de Fermin está un profundo compromiso de caminar junto a los demás en sus recorridos espirituales. «Como pastora, no puedo arreglar nada en sus vidas», dijo, «pero puedo ser testigo de cómo ven a Dios, abrazar su amor y encarnarlo con los demás».
Apasionada por ministrar a las personas en los momentos más críticos de la vida, está cursando la certificación oficial en capellanía. «La realidad es que la gente necesita sentirse vista y comprendida. Quiero estar siempre informada sobre el trauma y poder ofrecer un ministerio integral donde vaya», afirmó. Ese ministerio de compromiso para ayudar a los demás a sentirse vistos, comprendidos y valorados ejemplifica el corazón de Jesús y la afirmación de su ordenación.
